‘Young Labs’ (YL) – the results of the call
We are pleased to announce the results of the Young Labs’ (YL) call in the Anthropocene PRA under the strategic programme Excellence Initiative at the Jagiellonian University
The call was addressed to persons employed at the Jagiellonian University who have held a doctoral degree for up to 9 years. The aim of the call was to provide the financial support to actions by young researchers aimed at launching a research collaboration and founding their first research team (‘My First Lab, MFL’, for people who hold a PhD degree for less than 4 years) or consolidation or extension of a collaboration (‘My Advanced Lab, MAL’, for people who hold a PhD degree for more than 4 years but no longer than 9 years).
Only the research projects addressing at least one of the three research domains named in the Anthropocene PRA strategy, fulfilling the obligatory criteria of interdisciplinarity and internationalisation (the 4*I principle of the EI.JU programme), and related to at least one of the disciplines defined for the Anthropocene PRA (https://anthropocene.id.uj.edu.pl/en_GB/strategia) could be submitted.
The projects recommended for implementation may be carried out over 24 or 30 months (MFL), or 12 or 24 months (MAL). The maximum amount of funding per proposal is PLN 200,000.
Project evaluation included formal assessment and substantive assessment, i. e. compliance with the 4*I principle, project’s relevance for the PRA's thematic scope, quality, Outreach and implementation of the proposal and it was divided into:
- formal assessment (the call committee);
- evaluation by experts (JU employees) - only the applications meeting the formal criteria
- evaluation of reviewers (specialists from outside JU) - only the applications positively evaluated by experts.
- final project evaluation - recommendation agreed by the experts based on the reviews.

The results of the call
Based on the ranking list the following project were qualified for funding:
- AdsoCat - hybrid adsorption-catalytic system for elimination of volatile organic compounds
- Circular green chemistry: one-pot formation of hydrogen and higher hydrocarbons from bioresources
- Sand and dust as key factors in Mars exploration
- Novel solution for environmental protection – alkali glasses as soot combustion catalysts
- Towards understanding electrode processes taking place during the electrodeposition of semiconductors from the group of phosphides, sulfides, and selenides – a new class of catalytic materials
- Repressive law in times of a plague. How pandemic crisis changed our perception of liability, constitutional rights, and the role of the state? Comparative analysis
- Application of photochmistry as sustianable alternative to common synthetic methods
- Waste stream – A future waste based source of valuable elements? Determination of the raw material potential and possible negative influence on environment of elements present in bottom ash form municipal solid waste incineration plant and fly ash from sewage sludge
- Two environments. Environmental pressure on organisational resilience in time of pandemic and pro-environmental innovations. The example of catering industry in Poland and Latvia.
- SOIL Lab: Soil hazards and challenges in the Anthropocene
- Decarbonization of the energy sector in Poland – a threat or an opportunity for Poland's security?
- The new norm(ality) – (changes in) immigrants' adaptation strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic
- Lignin – a renewable, pro-ecological precursor of carbon adsorbents and photoactive substances support for the elimination of organic water pollutants

Appeals against the decision of the call committee
According to the Terms and Conditions the appeals against the call result verdict shall be lodged with the Call Committee through the Call Committee chair within one month of the date of publishing the call results i. e. by 31 August 2021.
Only formal faults of the proposal evaluation procedure may constitute the basis for an appeal (there shall be no appealing against the verdict passed by experts or reviewers).
